Haematological toxicity was graded according to the WHO criteria and for each patient the maximum grade of haematological toxicity was recorded. Severe haematological toxicity was defined as WHO grades 3 and 4. The duration of toxicity was measured from the onset of grades 3 and 4 toxicity until recovery to grade 2.

METHODS: Worst haematological toxicities (anaemia, leukopenia, neutropenia and thrombocytopenia) seen during treatment were scored according to CTCAE toxicity score. Differences in overall survival (OS), progression free survival (PFS) and response rate (RR) between patients with or without high haematological toxicity (grades 0-2 vs. 3-4) were assessed using conventional statistical tests.

These toxicities decrease production of red blood cells (anemia), production of white blood cells (neutropenia or granulocytopenia), and production of platelets (thrombocytopenia), which may be life-threatening to the patient. Haematological toxicity may exclude the patient from concomitant chemotherapy, thereby having important implications for treatment outcome.

Hematological toxicity is a decrease in bone marrow and blood cells, which may lead to infection, bleeding, or anemia. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) classifies five grades for blood toxicity, which refer to the severity of the adverse event (Table 1).
