Hydrolysis of cellulose using α-hydroxysulfonic acids (αHSAs) presents a novel approach to simplifying acid recovery from biomass hydrolysates. We present the results of comparing six different αHSAs, including two derived from molecules produced by the hydrolysis itself, for conversion of glucose or cellulose to levulinic acid.

Cellulose is a homopolysaccharide made of anhydroglucopyranose linked by β-1,4-glucosidic linkages, with a degree of polymerization (DP) ranging from several hundred to more than 10 000 (Zhang and Lynd 2004). waste consists of approximately 38 % cellulose, 32 % hemicellulose, 17 % lignin and 13 % other compounds. Acid pre-treatment, most often with diluted acids, will degrade hemicelluloses to other sugars (S), while the degradation of cellulose to glucose (G) is accomplished in the next step, enzymatic hydrolysis. Abstract. Cellulosic materials consist of three major components, namely, cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. The two modes of converting the carbohydrate components into their constituent sugars are enzymatic hydrolysis and acid hydrolysis.

Cellulosic materials consist of three major components, namely, cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. The two modes of converting the carbohydrate components into their constituent sugars are enzymatic hydrolysis and acid hydrolysis. The former has been reviewed in the preceding chapter [38,39, 81 ]. The present chapter covers the latter with the focus on mechanism and kinetics of acid hydrolysis.
